Inside Acting

In Episode 195, Trev and AJ chat about why *life* stuff > career news, and respond to a listener question that pits vision against the vision-less. Then Trev sits down for the third and final part of his interview with actor Doug Jones (Hell Boy, Falling Skies, Pan’s Labyrinth) – in which getting “pigeonholed” is a very good thing, why “if you don’t have anything to sell, don’t sell it yet,” the difference between turkeys, turds, and nuggets of gold, and how relationships, relationships, relationships are the true currency of every working actor’s career. Total running time: 1:15:32.

In Episode 194, Trev and AJ share about their “slow week” support groups, and respond to a listener question about how to tackle writing a feature film screenplay (see show notes for links!). Then Trev sits down for Part 2 with actor Doug Jones (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Falling Skies) to chat about how he built and refined his specificity through student films and indie projects, how he used that specificity to book a top commercial agent and blow up the commercial world, and how playing to type, doing good work, and not complaining about it is the surefire path to success in the entertainment industry. Total running time: 1:03:06.

In Episode 193, AJ shares some thoughts on balancing thrival jobs with acting gigs – like his new one with the New York Musical Festival (NYMF) – then he and Trev respond to a listener question about how and when to move on from a comfortable-but-no-longer-challenging learning environment. Then Trev sits down with actor Doug Jones (Hell Boy, Falling Skies, Pan’s Labyrinth) to hear about how he's built a 3o-year career on physical specificity – and how “Mime Over Matter” and playing his school’s mascot were the perfect training vehicles for what was to come. Total running time: 1:13:29.

Then AJ and Jasmin sit down for Part 2 of their chat with actress and stuntwoman Tammie Baird – delving deeper into the parallels – or lack thereof – between casting stunt peeps and casting, like, just regular actors. Total running time: 54:44.

In Episode 191, Trev and AJ recap AJ’s recent Digital Actor Workshop in L.A., riff a bit on the network-backed musical trend (and AJ’s mysterious upcoming meeting), and do one more deep dive on the Equity / 99-seat thing. Then AJ and Jasmin sit down for Part 1 of their chat with actress and stuntwoman Tammie Baird, all about how she stumbled (no pun intended) into the work, and about what it takes – both physically and professionally – to stay in the game. Total running time: 59:13.

In Episode 190, Trev and AJ reconnect in person (!!!) to chat about AJ’s Digital Actor Workshop, Trev’s continuing journey with Body Beast (fitness geek alert), and a listener-prompted discussion about “permission-based research” – or, how to eloquently (or not) solicit trust from potential collaborators. Then Trev sits down for the third and final part of his chat with actress and producer Alexandra Boylan to chat about the nitty gritty of making and distributing an independent feature film, and choosing the work (rather than waiting for it to choose you). Total running time: 1:06:33.

In Episode 189, AJ shares about a unique career situation, and Trev sits down with actress and filmmaker Alexandra Boylan for Part 2 of his chat about making her “pixie stick movie,” why NOT to have high expectations or investors on board for your first projects, and why your film’s poster is the most crucial asset it has. Total running time: 47:12.

In Episode 188, Trev and AJ interrupt their regularly scheduled interview series to share a very special “Rock the Vote” episode, dedicated to arming and empowering theatre artists with everything they need to know about the Actor’s Equity / 99-seat referendum.

Listen in as AJ unravels the context, history, what ifs, and action items in his in-depth conversations with veteran actors Rebecca Metz and Dakin Matthews. And even if you’re not an Equity member (or in Los Angeles), this is still a crucial issue that could soon be at everyone’s doorstep. Join us in taking a stand to ensure a true win-win for actors and small theaters all over the country. Total running time: 1:22:20.

In Episode 187, Trev and AJ chat about the “writing on the wall” – whether or not the CA drought combined with the growing trend of out-of-stage productions is a sign of things to come – as well as some thoughts on getting into the industry at a later age, and what’s to be gained from hitting up acting and modeling conventions.

Then Trev sits down with actress/producer Alexandra Boylan for the first of a must-hear three part chat on how she went from the damaging “pick me mentality” to actor/director for hire – with two sold scripts and completed features under her belt. Total running time: 59:12.

In Episode 186 – the final episode of Season 6 – AJ and Trev recap the first 90 days of the year, in the very first Quarterly Review episode. What worked? What didn’t? Why? And what’s next? And what the heck is an LOA? And did that membership thing they keep talking about happen? (Spoiler alert: yes, yes it did.) Total running time: 59:09.
